How to update your jeans on a budget

Boyfriends, skinnies, straight leg: whatever your shape, good jeans are the cornerstone of any fashionable wardrobe. Updating your jeans for the season doesn’t have to be a huge expense. When you are looking for instant style on a budget, these quick and simple fashion tips will help you re-invent a pair of cheap jeans or even give a new lease of life to your old jeans.

    Get distressed

Distressed denim is here to stay, from frayed hems to ripped knees. Giving your jeans that worn-in look couldn’t be easier. Make sure to put on your jeans first and mark the area that you want to create that white thread ripped effect and get started:

Step 1. Cut horizontal strips across the denim approximately half an inch apart. The cuts should be made at the length and shape you would like the hole to be. Be careful not to cut through the back side of the jeans.

Step 2. You should now be able to see blue threads running vertically and white threads running horizontally. With a pair of tweezers, remove the blue threads for an instant ripped effect.

This look will get more pronounced with washing, so feel free to pop them in the washing machine to exaggerate the distressed effect.

    To dye for

Have you found your dream jeans in a wash that simply doesn’t suit your wardrobe? When trying to keep ahead of the trends without breaking the bank, you have to think creatively. There are many excellent fabric dyes on the market that can help to transform those jeans into the perfect dark navy blue.

Step 1. Fill a bucket with hot water and add 1 bottle of blue dye and half a bottle of black dye, making sure that everything is fully mixed. Wear gloves and avoid contact with the dye to avoid staining.

Step 2. Place your jeans into the dye making sure they are fully covered and leave to soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Give them a stir approximately every 10 minutes to ensure that the dye takes evenly.

Step 3. Remove your jeans and rinse them in cold water until the water runs clear. Run them through the washing machine on a cold wash by themselves once before wearing to rinse off any residual dye.

These are only two of the ways that you can cleverly re-design your denim to suit your style. Remember, cheap fashion is no less chic fashion.
